Volunteer as a Site Captain

A Site Captain is the on-site project lead for a Rebuilding Together Peninsula (RTP) volunteer team project, most often on a Rebuilding Day. As a Site Captain, you help plan and manage a safe, well-organized, and rewarding experience for both our homeowner clients and our volunteers.

“Being a Site Captain is a direct reflection of what I hold valuable … at its most basic level it’s just helping people out.”

-Charlie, RTP Site Captain

What Makes a Good Site Captain?

While specific repair skills can be helpful, advanced construction experience is not always required. Equally important are leadership, organization, communication, and enthusiasm for contributing to RTP’s vision of safe and healthy housing for everyone.

Site Captains:

  • Enjoy leading teams and coordinating projects
  • Are comfortable communicating with homeowners, volunteers, and RTP staff
  • Have an interest in home repair, construction, or learning hands-on skills
  • Value collaboration, safety, and community impact

Experienced tradespeople are welcome, but motivated volunteers with strong project skills are just as essential.

What Does a Site Captain Do?

Before a Rebuilding Day

  • Attend RTP training and project site visit(s)
  • Collaborate with RTP staff, homeowner clients, and volunteer leads to understand project goals
  • Help plan a work scope based on budget, timeline, and volunteer skills
  • Help identify needed materials and supplies
  • Coordinate any advance prep work, if needed

On a Rebuilding Day

  • Welcome volunteers and set expectations for the day
  • Review site safety and outline roles and tasks
  • Lead and oversee completion of the work scope, including cleanup
  • Support and engage volunteers, ensuring a safe, productive, and enjoyable experience on the day
  • Confirm homeowner sign-off at project completion

After a Rebuilding Day

  • Document and closeout completed work
  • Coordinate completion of any remaining scope in collaboration with RTP
  • Provide feedback and evaluation to RTP
  • Celebrate a job well done and lasting community impact!

Ready to Get Involved?

Site Captain roles are most common during RTP’s Rebuilding Days in the spring and fall, though prep and special projects may occur throughout the year. If you’re interested in becoming a Site Captain, or have questions, we’d love to hear from you.
