Carl, a homeowner in Burlingame, and his 3-year-old son, Romeo, were the recipients of support from RTP’s recently launched Lead Paint Remediation Program. After high lead levels were discovered in Romeo’s blood, it became evident that something needed to be done about the old, peeling paint both on the interior and exterior of their home. When Carl received a call from San Mateo County about the free service, he and his partner were thrilled.
“The project was super seamless. (The workers) came in within just a few days. They were very detail-oriented and asked questions about how we wanted certain things, so they really cared about personalizing it,” Carl said. “I would recommend that anyone who is considering going through this process, do it not only for the safety of your kids but also for your own mental health and well-being.”
The program is a partnership between Rebuilding Together Peninsula and San Mateo County, whereby older homes across the county can receive lead remediation support. Thousands of homes built before 1978 may be eligible. The Lead Paint Remediation Program is designed to eliminate a serious threat to the health and well-being of children in the county and is available to qualifying residents at no cost. The service provides free inspection and repairs by certified contractors to address unsafe levels of lead paint in the residence.
