Star never imagined herself working in an office. She’s an artist by trade and a small business owner focused on plant and interior design. But when a mentor of hers, a long-time volunteer site captain for RTP, suggested she apply for the role of Manager of the Lead Paint Prevention Program, she said yes, and has found herself loving it.
“It really cracked my heart open,” Star said. “I saw myself in these clients and the struggles they have, so it’s close to home for me. It was no longer about having the extra income. It was about recognizing some of the problems and being able to help.”
As the Lead Paint Program Manager, Star is responsible for overseeing lead removal in homes throughout San Mateo County. Projects begin with the initial intake to ensure applicants are eligible for the program, paint chip analysis, working with an environmental specialist, and coordinating with a remediation contractor. The program is possible thanks to funding from a multi-year contract with San Mateo County to support local homeowners at risk. “I really hope to make more connections in the community and (make RTP) better known,” Star said.
When Star isn’t focused on lead paint, she’s busy raising her 9-year-old daughter and working on her art and woodworking projects. She also loves to hike and spend time in nature.
